FAQ
Q. Are the crafts/projects the same ones they
feature in the retired AG books (I believe there
was a cookbook, craftbook, etc.), or are these
different ones that you came up with ?
A. If you have the old Pleasant Company teacher's
guides, craft and recipe books, there are only a couple
of duplicates in our unit study kit, such as Addy's spool
puppets, but I tried to also offer other options for both
recipes and craft ideas, or at the very least, links to
other ideas on the web. I didn't like the recipes in the
cook/craft books because only half of them seemed
historically accurate to me. A lot of the supplies were
just not available during that historic time period. I did
quite a bit of research and tried to offer crafts and recipes
that the girls would have REALLY made or eaten at that
time, or had eaten in the book. For example, I wasn't
crazy about any of the recipes for Samantha. I wasn't
sure how thrilled my girls would be with making cucumber
sandwiches. In the books, Samantha would always save
her gingerbread man cookie and sneak it to Nellie at their
secret meetings, so we made gingerbread cookies. I give
the option of making them from scratch, or buying a boxed
mix...since I knew the most popular part would be decorating
the cookies. The girls LOVED doing this and since it came
directly from the book, they could relate it to the story itself.
Q. Will the supplies needed to make the crafts be easy to
find? Also, do you have any "guesstimate" as to how much
it would cost to make the crafts?
A. Yes, all of the ingredients for the recipes and supplies for
the crafts can be found at your local grocery and craft store.
For book club meetings for ten girls, you can estimate about
$10-20 per meeting cost. If you charge membership dues of
$2-5 per girl, this will cover your cost and allow extra for
your time.
Q. I would love to do the unit study with my 10 year old,
but I need to include my 6 year old too. Would she be able
to participate?
A. Yes, younger siblings will love the activities, although a
few of the more challenging crafts will require a little
assitance.
Q. How can I present the idea of a book club to my home-
schooling group?
A. The Book Club Kit includes a guide sheet on introducing
the idea to a homeschool co-op through an email and an
information meeting. Registration forms are also included
for your convenience.
supplement to the American Girlhood unit study?
A. Yes, our recipes and crafts would be the perfect
compliment to the book and would enhance the curriculum
by bringing in some fun activites, and give your students
hands-on experience which will allow them to really enjoy
their schoolwork.
